“ (2015) Overall, the presentation of the artwork has a lot that can be interpreted any many back and forth discussion showed that each symbol can interpret something different. According to Arbiter, Picasso provided no meaning of the symbols or shapes used throughout the painting, stating that “he never offered anything more revelatory than ‘This bull is a bull and this horse is a horse’, adding, ‘If you give a meaning to certain things in my paintings it may be very true, but it is not my idea to give this meaning’. The use of symbolism depicted through the many shapes the painting has to offer is seen to be quite overwhelming. Amongst many other symbolic parts to this painting, as you glance back and for, you begin to see how destruction, death and sadness come together to present a picture of the dark times that took place. As you work your way down the painting you come across a soldier on the ground with a distorted body and broken sword where the soldier is seen to be on the verge of death. For instance, the “Bull of Guernica” seen on the far left hovering over the women holding the dead child in her arms, head cocked back as she cries for help, according to Picasso himself, was a placement to further signify the brutality and darkness that took place. Another element used throughout the whole painting was the use of symbolism (shapes) to emphasize death and destruction.
This painting has a lot to offer but at the same time can be seen as overwhelming to eye. The lack of color can also help illustrate the feeling of death due to the elimination of warm and cool colors, keeping the viewer engaged to the level of “darkness” found throughout the whole painting. In this painting, Picasso eliminates the essence of color to intensify the dramatic feel of a photographic image as if it were being seen on the front page of a newspaper to reinforce the harsh reality of what was going on.

Guernica, a painting that instills a powerful political statement, was of an immediate reaction to the horrific bombing practices done by Nazi’s on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. One of Picasso’s most famous works of art.
